A Lot of Hot Air

I really struggled with this week’s blog.  Not because I couldn’t think of anything to write about.  To the contrary.  There were too many things to write about.

President Obama claiming that things are going great now with Obamacare.  Ha!  The House Judiciary Committee (I’m a member) holding a hearing yesterday entitled “The President’s Constitutional Duty to Faithfully Execute the Laws” (which he’s not.)  If you’re interested in this topic, you might want to go back to my August 21st blog entitled “President Obama Took an Oath.  He’s Not Living Up to It.”  I also considered writing about China’s recent provocation towards the United States and our allies – unilaterally declaring a new air defense zone over islands claimed by both China and Japan.

Instead, I’m going to write about – hurricanes.  Or more specifically, the lack thereof.

For quite some time now we’ve been hearing from global warming/climate change alarmists that global warming is responsible for everything from more and stronger hurricanes, to colder weather, to zombies.  Well, not zombies, but they have had the audacity to claim that blizzards, and colder than normal weather, are actually the fault of – global warming.  And of course the solution to global warming/climate change is more government regulation, less freedom for you and me, and higher taxes (oops, revenues.)

Hurricane Sandy, which devastated the coastal areas of New York and New Jersey last year, was used as an example of what we are in for, due to global warming.  No evidence of course, but it presented the perfect storm (sorry) to be exploited.  New York City’s then-busybody Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, shamelessly entitled the cover story about Hurricane Sandy in his magazine, Bloomberg’s Businessweek, “It’s Global Warming, Stupid.”

So this year, global warming zealots were loaded for bear.  Many predicted we would have more hurricanes this year, and stronger ones, than ever before.  Batten down the hatches.  Board up your windows.  Take the children and pets to higher ground.  The hurricanes are coming!

So what happened?  Well, hurricane season officially ended over the weekend, November 30th to be exact.  (It goes from June through November.)  We had the FEWEST hurricanes we have had in more than 30 years!  It was predicted that we’d have seven to nine hurricanes.  We had two.  And Humberto and Ingrid were the weakest possible hurricanes, category 1’s.  (A category 5 is the strongest.)

Now I’m not claiming that global warming doesn’t exist.  (I’m not saying that it does.)  But I am saying that we should be skeptical of those who make claims that they can’t back up with facts.  Just as we need to be skeptical of those who make promises which they have no intention of keeping.  Like the guy who promised that we could keep our healthcare if we liked it.

See you next week.
