The new Congress had only been sworn in three days earlier, when one of its own, Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona, was shot and severely wounded along with a considerable number of other innocents. Six people lost their lives. The alleged perpetrator of this heinous act was a 22 year-old man who by all accounts is deeply mentally disturbed.
In the wake of this tragedy, we’ve seen some try to politicize this tragedy for their own benefit. We as Americans are better than that. The politicization must stop, and stop now.
Whereas it is appropriate that Members of Congress take reasonable and prudent measures to ensure the safety of the public who attend their various events, it is also an important part of the job to interact with their constituents. I will continue to make myself accessible to the people I represent, as I always have in the past.
At the end of the day we all want what’s best for our country and our families. We must never lose sight of this.
