Congress Spends More on Itself

Americans are hurting.  Our economy is in recession.  The unemployment rate in Ohio is now approaching 11%.  Many people have lost their homes through foreclosure, or are about to.  People are cutting back on spending on their own families.

So what has Congress done about spending on itself?  Well, even though the rate of inflation has been only 2-3% per year over the past five years, and this year is actually in negative territory, the Pelosi Congress just voted to increase the amount Members of Congress can spend for their own offices by 8%.  EIGHT PERCENT!

So while everyone else has to watch what they spend, Congress allows itself 8% more than last year.  And this is on top of Congress’s wasteful spending on so called economic stimulus packages; car company and bank bailouts; and a gigantic new takeover of healthcare which will cost over a trillion dollars.

Tom Schatz, President of Citizens Against Government Waste commented that it is “more than ironic that Congress is going in the opposite direction” at a time when most businesses are trying to find ways to reduce spending.

The American people deserve better than this.
