It’s Finally Over

It was a good night for America.  Republicans took over the United States Senate, overthrowing obstructionist Harry Reid.  Republicans added about 15 seats to their majority in the House (it’s the largest Republican majority in the House since World War II.)  And Republicans now hold 31 state governorships, to the Democrats’ 18 (with one independent in Alaska.)

Why did it happen?  Mainly it was a rejection of the failed policies of Barack Obama, both domestically and in foreign affairs.  Partly it was the so-called six year itch – the tendency for the party opposite the President to do well in the election cycle before he leaves an eight year term.

Whatever the reason, it happened.  Now let’s make it work for America.

Whether President Obama and Republicans who now control both houses of Congress can work cooperatively together for the good of the country, remains to be seen.  I hope so.

As I’ve said before, my optimistic side tells me that this President may be looking towards his legacy, and therefore want to accomplish some things which will look good in the history books.  However my pessimistic side tells me that he’s a hardcore, it’s my way or the highway, left-wing, Saul Alinsky ideologue, and is incapable of good faith negotiation and compromise, and therefore not much will get accomplished over the next two years.  I hope my optimistic side is right.

Only time will tell.
