In one of the more important decisions the U.S. Supreme Court has reached so far this term, the nation’s highest court has issued what most pundits are calling a “split decision” on immigration. The Court upheld Arizona’s “show me your papers” provision, which allows police to determine the legal status of persons they stop or arrest, if there is reason to suspect the person stopped may be in the country illegally. (Sounds reasonable to me.)
However, the Supreme Court also struck down several other provisions of the Arizona immigration law, including one which would have made it a crime for illegal immigrants to work or seek work in the United States, even though here illegally. (Seemed like common sense to me, but the split court didn’t see it that way.)
In my view, the real outrage is that a border state like Arizona, felt it was even necessary to pass it’s own immigration law in the first place, because the federal government has been so unserious about enforcing existing federal laws on immigration. And this has been true under the Obama Administration, as well as under the previous Bush Administration.
We are long overdue in this nation, for a serious effort to deal with a number of key issues which have been getting nothing but lip service for years. Our borders must be secured, and the rampant disregard for our immigration laws must cease. Our $16 trillion national debt is smothering our economy, and we must slam the brakes on the out-of-control spending in Washington once and for all. Our burdensome and incomprehensible tax code should be tossed out, and an easily understandable flatter, simpler, fairer tax code should be adopted. And the growth of power in Washington, and the resulting reduction in freedom for the American people, must be reversed. More personal responsibility, more freedom, less government.
Those who have closely followed my time in Congress, and at the local level of government, know where I come down on these issues. It’s for that reason that the advocates of bigger and bigger government (like Nancy Pelosi for example) would like to see me replaced with one of their big-government acolytes. They were successful in accomplishing this back in 2008, and they got someone who voted for Stimulus, Obamacare, Cap and Trade, Dodd-Frank, and on and on. They were able to defeat me largely due to candidate Barack Obama’s long coattails, and they hope to do so again this year, since Obama will once again be on the ballot. We can’t let that happen. So I’ll need your help.
