The Lions and the Wildebeests

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been a big fan of Animal Planet-type nature shows – Big Cat Diary, etc. When I was a kid, I couldn’t wait to see Wild Cargo (we’re going back pretty far now!)

I always found it fascinating how a lion pride would lie in wait, intently watching as the wildebeests would lumber along in front of them. The Thompson gazelles would bound along; the healthier they were, the higher they would jump. Their message to any predators who might be watching (like the lions): “Look how healthy and strong I am. Don’t waste your time trying to catch me; pick someone else.”

The lions scrutinize every potential meal for any sign of weakness. Which one may have a slight limp? Which one is growing old? Which one has been born recently and may not be able to run as fast, or veer off to the left or the right as quickly?

I know you’re wondering, where is Steve going with this? He usually blogs about government, or politics, or world affairs, or Gitmo. Well, I’ll get to the point now.

Tomorrow, Thursday, March 31, is the last day of the first quarter of the 2011-2012 election cycle. Every candidate running for Congress must report to the FEC (Federal Election Commission), how much money they’ve raised (and spent), for their campaigns so far.

The candidates (like me) are the prey (the wildebeests or the Thompson gazelles); the DCCC and the NRCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Campaign Committee) are the lions. The party committees will closely scrutinize every candidate’s fundraising numbers for signs of weakness. Now some will be scrutinized more closely than others, especially those candidates (like me) who have tough districts. Especially those who have shown historically that the districts can go either way.

It’s important that when the DCCC looks at me, as they always do, that they see strength (like the high-jumping gazelles), not weakness, like the slightly lame wildebeests. Thus, I need your help.

I know times are tough, and money is tight, and gas prices are high, but if you are able to help by making a contribution to my campaign today or tomorrow, it would be a big help.

You can make a secure online contribution by clicking here, or you can mail a contribution to: Chabot for Congress, 3030 Harrison Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45211.

Thank you in advance for your support. Now that we worked so hard to successfully win back this seat in Congress, it’s important that we not lose it in the upcoming election. Please help me to keep the liberal lions of the DCCC at bay!

Thanks again. See you next week.
