You Can Vote – NOW!

More and more people are taking advantage of the opportunity to vote early in Ohio.  The law changed about five years ago in our state, making it possible now for any registered voter to vote absentee through the mail, or go to the Board of Elections in person downtown at 824 Broadway.  In fact, yesterday, Tuesday, September 28th, was the first day to do so in this big midterm election, and I’d encourage you to do so if you’re so inclined.

Former Congressman and future Senator Rob Portman and I attended a rally at Harvest Home Park in Cheviot yesterday, and after speaking to a large group of enthusiastic westsiders, we jumped on buses and accompanied them down to the Board of Elections to early vote (of course we couldn’t actually go into the voting booth with them – much as we’d have liked to!)

The Cincinnati Enquirer, in a nod to the fact that so many Ohioans are voting so far in advance of the actual Election Day, which is still more than a month off, decided to announce their early “picks.”  Here’s what they said this past Sunday:

“We believe it’s important to give readers some early commentary that lets them know which candidates we are favoring.  And so, starting late last month, we invited candidates in the races listed on this page to meet for conversations with Enquirer reporters and editors.  Based on these meetings, news accounts and the campaigns themselves, we present today our “picks” for those who cast an early ballot.

Ohio 1st District:  In this rematch with national implications in the fight for control of the House, we strongly favor former Rep. Steve Chabot (R) over the man who defeated him in 2008, Rep. Steve Driehaus (D). Although his achievements were at issue two years ago, Chabot’s record in the House was more solid, thoughtful and collaborative than conventional wisdom suggested. He would return as a voice for fiscal sanity, and has shown independence and grit. Despite Driehaus’ protestations on the health care reform bill, the current rep has dug himself a hole with his consistent defense of an increasingly unpopular Democratic House agenda that’s ridden roughshod over the rules. His campaign ads sound desperate and shrill.”

The Enquirer editorial pretty much speaks for itself, but I thought they particularly got it right when they said that Driehaus’s campaign ads sound “desperate and shrill.”  Only a desperate candidate would continue to lash out with his baseless negative attacks.  His veteran medals ad was particularly pathetic, and has been thoroughly debunked.  Perhaps Mr. Driehaus will consider elevating the level of his campaign after the Enquirer’s thrashing, but I doubt it.  Finally, I thought you might like to see our latest ad, which just started airing.  I think it’s really good, but you decide.
