There are many reasons why Democrats are likely to lose control of Congress at the end of this year. They’ve blundered on the economy, energy, the border, crime, foreign affairs, and on and on. But they’ve really screwed up when it comes to something that’s of the utmost importance to every parent in America – and that’s their children’s education.
Now I’m a former schoolteacher myself. as well as a parent, and now a grandparent. And I can tell you without any hesitation that you better not mess with our kids and grandkids. And that’s just what Democrats have been doing for at least the last two years.
Of course we needed to deal seriously with COVID, and make sure that the safety of our children was considered a top priority. But relatively early on, it became quite clear that children were about the least vulnerable part of our population to the virus. But The Left and the teachers’ unions in many communities insisted on keeping schools closed, and mandatory masking, way beyond reasonability.
This has resulted in many children, especially in already under-performing urban areas, falling even further behind. And young children may never make up for years of being unable to see facial expressions on their teachers and fellow classmates due to forced, unnecessary masking.
Parents across America have been saying “enough” loud and clear. In Virginia, for example, Governor Youngkin was elected largely on a platform of parental rights in the wake of liberal school boards’ overzealous restrictions on their children. During the election last fall, when I was driving from Reagan airport, which is in Virginia, to Washington DC, I saw signs popping up all over the place which read “Parents for Youngkin”. It was an obvious indication that Youngkin’s message was resonating.
When parents started showing up at school board meetings in Virginia, and elsewhere across the country, to voice their concerns about continuing forced masking, CRT, and other things they opposed, parents were met with criticism from many school board officials, calling them “domestic terrorists”. And whereas violence is never acceptable, we WANT parents actively involved in their children’s education.
The most recent indication that liberals/Democrats are on the defensive on education took place in, of all places, Nancy Pelosi‘s own congressional district in San Francisco. Seven of the seven school board members there were Democrats (not surprisingly), and also not surprisingly they’d kept the kids locked out of their schools (to protect them from COVID) far too long. And instead of trying to figure out a way to get the kids back into their classrooms, the school board spent its time pursuing wokeness, including renaming schools. After all, how could they allow children to attend schools named after such slaveholding racists as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln – Abraham Lincoln for God’s sake who literally freed the slaves!
The same thing is likely to happen this fall in more normal parts of the country, like Iowa, and Pennsylvania, and Cincinnati, Ohio.
