The Democrats Go Fishing

The Democrats have set off on one of the biggest fishing expeditions in American history. The House Judiciary Committee, which is now under Democrat control, is demanding documents from 81 people who somehow have connections with Donald Trump. These people are friends, family, business associates of the President, you name it. If you’re one of these people, they may have no idea what you have, but dagnabbit, you’re going to turn it over. We’re going to find something to take down this President, and nothing is going to stop us.

This is not how it’s supposed to work in America. As you may know, I’ve been a Member of the Judiciary Committee for a long time – as a matter of fact, 23 years now. Among other things, we oversee the Justice Department, including the FBI. And there’s a saying at Justice “we investigate crimes, not people.” In other words, first a crime occurs – then you investigate people to determine who did it. You don’t pick out a person first – then thoroughly and invasively investigate that person until you find something they’ve at some point done wrong, and then charge them with a crime. And in my opinion, that’s precisely what the Dems are doing relative to Donald Trump.

They remind me of the Lilliputians trying to tie down Gulliver. Having to respond to multiple investigations and legions of demands for documents could keep President Trump and his staff and family so occupied with this that the President’s policies and plans go unenacted. We can’t let that happen.

The Left hates this President so much (they consider him illegitimate) that they’ll do anything to stop him. We’ve seen that since the day he was inaugurated and there was violence and mayhem in Washington, DC and across the country.

The Democrat base and the AOC’s, the Maxine Waters, and the Tom Steyers of the party want to see President Trump impeached – now, ASAP. But Speaker Pelosi and Chuck Schumer and the leadership of the Democrat Party want to damage the President as much as possible, but are leery of moving forward with an impeachment. Why? Because they fear being on the receiving end of what happened in the impeachment of Bill Clinton. The majority of the public ultimately turned on Republicans who had moved forward on impeachment, and rallied around Bill Clinton. He was at the height of his popularity after prevailing in impeachment. (He was actually impeached by the House – the 2/3s needed to remove a president in the Senate wasn’t there.)

Here are my thoughts. Oversight of a presidency by Congress is appropriate. Afterall our founding fathers had in mind checks and balances between the three branches of government when they adopted our glorious Constitution. But what the Democrats are attempting to do here, in my view, goes way beyond appropriate oversight. They’re trying to neuter a presidency. They’re trying to make him completely ineffective, incapable of doing his job. They’re trying to overturn an election. It’s in essence a coup.

This irresponsible conduct by the Democrats is reckless, and it’s wrong. It is likely to distract the President from carrying out to the best of his ability his Constitutional duties. I would urge my Democratic colleagues to rein in their ill-considered probe before it irreparably harms our country.
