It seems like the world has gone completely crazy. The brutal savages known as ISIS have taken over much of Iraq and Syria, and are lopping off the heads of innocent Christians and moderate Muslims, destroying priceless irreplaceable historic sites and artifacts which are thousands of years old, and attacking and killing innocent civilians in Paris and Turkey and now are threatening the United States. Yet our President has kept off limits from air attacks, ISIS’s principal source of funding, their oil transportation infrastructure (trucks, etc.) Why? According to Obama’s own former CIA deputy director, Michael Morell, because Barack Obama is concerned about possible environmental damage. WHAT? If FDR had handcuffed our military back then, the way Barack Obama is today, we’d all be speaking German now.
Perhaps just as crazy, Democrat candidate for president, Bernie Sanders’ insistence that climate change (formerly known as global warming, until it started getting colder than usual) is to blame for the rise of ISIS, and further that climate change is the greatest threat to our national security. But crazy as that may sound, particularly after Paris, such loony thinking shouldn’t surprise us, as Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and John Kerry have all at one time or another said pretty much the same thing.
And since things usually come in threes, let me point out a third outrage that occurred recently: the termination of Providence, Rhode Island’s famous dancing cop, Tony Lepore. What was his mortal sin? Being found wanting in the political correctness department. Here’s the story.
Tony retired from the Providence police department 25 years ago. But since then he’s brought holiday cheer to drivers in Providence with his expressive, over-the-top dance moves while directing traffic. (See FOX News video by clicking here.) Then last month, a police officer was purchasing coffee in a Dunkin Donuts in Providence, when a store employee wrote “Black Lives Matter” on the police officer’s cup before handing it to him. The “dancing cop” took offense at this, and led a small protest outside the donut shop. Well the “Black Lives Matter” folks took offense at Tony’s taking offense, put pressure on the city, and managed to have him banned from further employment as a holiday dancing cop.
So the community across the river from Providence, East Providence, hired Tony Lepore to be their dancing cop this year, but now Black Lives Matter is protesting that, so we’ll see whether East Providence surrenders to Black Lives Matter’s bullying tactics or not. They have a track record of intimidating people, especially political figures, into doing what they want them to do. They bullied Bernie Sanders into giving up his speaking podium to them a few months back. And they got Democratic presidential candidate Martin O’Malley to publicly apologize to them for making the common sense observation that “Black lives matter. White lives matter. All lives matter.”
This surrender to political correctness is especially evident nowadays on college campuses. College used to be a place for young people to explore a broad range of ideas. No more. Now we have college professors being attacked for failure to be sufficiently offended by allegedly insensitive Halloween costumes, on one of America’s preeminent campuses, Yale. We have both the president and the chancellor of the University of Missouri being forced to step down over ALLEGED systematic racism and insensitivity.
And in order to graduate from the University of Michigan (where I almost went to play football for the late great Bo Schembechler, but instead went to William and Mary where I was recruited by the not late, but great, Lou Holtz) it is now necessary to take and complete a course, which in essence espouses the point of view that the United States is a racist and intolerant nation.
The bottom line is, the Hard Left in this country is bound and determined to get their way, whatever it takes. They believe what they believe, and they won’t be satisfied until we all believe what they believe, whether we like it or not. According to them, conservatives are a bunch of racists. The only speech acceptable on college campuses anymore is speech which they approve. And if you won’t conform, you’re dangerous. You don’t belong on a college campus, and you certainly can’t be a dancing cop.
